6月22日のオープンキャンパスの体験授業は、日本に初めて来た外国人と日本人の会話をもとに、日本文化を英語で発信する勉強をしました。
カナダからの観光客Billは、友人の久美と和食を食べにレストランに行きました。Billは和食をお箸で食べることは知っていましたが、割り箸を見るのは初めてでした、お箸が1つしかないと騒いでいるBillに久美はどんな説明をしたのでしょうか。
Bill: Wow, this is a nice little restaurant! Real Japanese style…great!
(holding up his 割り箸) Oh—oh, they only gave me one chopstick!
I’ll call the waiter….
Kumi: No, no! It’s OK. This “one chopstick” is really two chopsticks!
Bill: But I only have one!
Kumi: Two!
Bill: Two?
Kumi: Yes, one … (pulling the chopsticks apart) two! See?
Bill: Hey! You broke it! You broke it!
Kumi: No, no. Don’t worry! These are disposable chopsticks.
Just … (uses the chopsticks). See?
Bill: Oh, OK. That’s cool. (pulls his chopsticks apart) Cool! Thanks!
Kumi: Now, let’s order.
Billが一つだと思った箸は、使い捨ての箸(割り箸)で、二つに割って使える(壊したのではない)ということを久美は実演してみせました。
2020年のオリンピックに向けて、海外からの観光客がますます増えると予想されています。彼らに日本の文化を伝えることも、「お・も・て・な・し」ですね。
